Epitaphs
Death can’t talk to you;
the best it can do is leave
notes and messages.
Before you die leave nothing
unremarked,
set down the darkest
dangerous thought.
Now witness literature in
many years to come:
whole libraries stand fit to
burst with shelves of paper graves.
Strolling through, you meet
whole generations
as dead as six feet under,
but each providing testimony
that they also have known
the absurdest thing of all.
