from the dangerous world

that sought to prise him
from other thoughts
from the soft world

that night he’d dreamt
she had a scar
on her smooth face

daylight reminded him
a long-forgotten truth:
under her eye was a scar

the urgent message
shattered in the shallows

her memory
swam deep
all day
