Table d'hôte

Surprise! They just sat down again,
Calling up things that you forgot,
Fixing the things that still remain,
Doing the things you'd rather not.

And here come more - get extra chairs -
Tunnelling down into your brain,
Catching the dark thoughts unawares,
Rendering busy patterns plain.

The waiter wonders if you've got
Everything that you ordered now?
Things in the past you found too hot
Glow in your gut as cool as flares.

You watch them go without a word,
Wander out to the parking lot,
Ready to ease another's pain.
Leaving you here alone somehow.
